homemade sushi

My first sushi experience was memorable. I’d never been a big fan of fish, but it was freshman year and I was open to trying new things.  So I decided the quickest, but probably not the best decision, was to buy it at the TCU cafeteria. Fortunately the sushi was great! And I’ve been a sushi fan ever since. The problem? It’s SOOO expensive. I’d love to eat 3 rolls and a healthy serving of sashimi, but then I’d have to starve for the rest of the week.

Solution? What if I made it myself? Would it be any cheaper? Turns out YES! It is cheaper- but only when you’re making it in large quantities! You’ll have to buy sushi rice, nori (seaweed paper), sushi-grade meat and anything else you want in it, but it makes a mountain of delicious sushi. If you decide to take on this task, just know it’s time consuming. Rolling isn’t a simple process either-lucky for us, Rob was better at it than me. We made a spicy tuna roll, crab, cucumber and avocado roll, and a rainbow roll. Start with some edamame and a Kirin Ichiban and you’ll think you were at a restaurant!
